Founder of Turning Leaf | Lead Consultant, Neuheit Solutions

Barkley Engel is the founder of Turning Leaf — a national non-profit mental health care organization he started in his basement and grew into a $40M+ enterprise with over 750 employees. That journey, from a single idea to one of Canada's most respected mental health organizations, is the foundation of everything Neuheit Solutions offers.

With 25 years of senior management experience — including over 20 years as CEO — Barkley has navigated every challenge a non-profit leader can face: building culture from scratch, managing through industry downturns, leading complex mergers and organizational transformations, and sustaining growth while staying true to a mission. He has been in your shoes, at every stage.

What sets Barkley apart is a rare combination that most consultants simply don't have: executive leadership, formal therapeutic training, and deep governance expertise — all applied exclusively within the non-profit sector. He has consulted and collaborated with over 30 government and non-profit organizations across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Ontario and Nova Scotia, delivering over 400 training sessions to more than 6,000 attendees across Canada.

A Rare Combination of Expertise

Most consultants bring one lens. Barkley brings four — and they work together.

Executive Leadership

20 years as CEO of a non-profit organization. Barkley has navigated every challenge you're facing — from board dynamics and budget pressures to culture crises and organizational growth — from the inside.

Therapeutic Training

Formal therapeutic training gives Barkley a deep understanding of human behaviour, trauma-informed practice, and the psychological dimensions of organizational change that most business consultants overlook.

Governance Expertise

Extensive experience working with and advising Boards of Directors — from policy creation and by-laws to board recruitment, training, and ensuring organizations operate in full compliance with applicable legislation.

Mergers & Transformations

Proven experience leading organizational mergers and complex business transformations. Barkley has guided organizations through high-stakes structural change while preserving culture and stakeholder trust.

Training & Facilitation at Scale

Barkley has developed over 30 original training programs covering Servant Leadership, Transformational Leadership, Organizational Assessment, Strategic Planning, Management Skills, Creative Problem Solving, Employee Performance Engagement, Risk Assessment & Planning, and Organizational Culture — among others.
